What you need to know:

  • Ms Angweri said she could not unveil her manifesto because the Electoral Commission and her own NRM party have not issued the roadmap. However, she highlighted what informed her decision to contest against the Health Minister.

A section of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders have welcomed the decision by Ms Sarah Awor Angweri to contest for the Lira City Woman Member of Parliament seat. The seat is currently occupied by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Minister of Health.

Ms Angweri, 40, who is the female workers’ representative in Lira City Council, declared her political intentions at St. Lira Hotel on November 20.

Mr Daniel Okello, the Lira City West Division NRM youth chairperson, said Ms Angweri will represent the interests of the youth in the area.

“I want to say the future is now for us young people and that is why we’re unveiling Sarah Awor Angweri to contest for the position of Woman Member of Parliament 2026-2031,” he said.

Mr Okello further said some of the current leaders are not doing enough to ensure there is accommodative space in leadership.

Mr Joel Juke, the NRM chairperson for Lira Sub-county, hailed Ms Angweri for taking the decision.
“We, in the party, should not be intimidated by anyone. There is no one who can come and tell you that you should not stand. We are ready as party leaders to endorse you and give you our blessings,” he added.

Ms Angweri said she could not unveil her manifesto because the Electoral Commission and her own NRM party have not issued the roadmap. However, she highlighted what informed her decision to contest against the Health Minister.

“I’ve already seen the problems that the people of Lango are going through. We have a lot of disunity, we have fighting everywhere, and there are people who want to bring war to us,” Ms. Angweri said.
“So, we are here to neutralise all the wars and we send somebody who will not fight anybody but stick to her manifesto,” she added.

However, Mr.Patrick Okwir, one of Dr Aceng’s political mobilisers, said:
“Those who are boasting that they want to contest against Dr. Aceng, what have they done for the people of Lira City? It’s a big shame that people who are not known in their home village want to run against Dr Aceng.”
