The opposition Democratic Party (DP) has officially nominated Henry Kasacca Mubiru, a governance and democracy specialist, as its flag bearer in the upcoming Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.

The seat became vacant after the passing of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who died on January 9 at Rubaga Hospital.

At the DP headquarters in Kampala, party president and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, introduced Kasacca as the candidate.

Mao emphasized that Uganda is in need of healing and reconciliation, starting at the grassroots level.

He expressed confidence that Kasacca’s candidacy would offer a grounded, intellectual approach to the political challenges facing the nation.

“We need reconciliation, and we must begin within our own party,” Mao said. “The divisions we’ve had in the past affected our performance. We need leaders who can debate on substance, not just entertainment,” he noted.

Mao added that with numerous comedians already serving in Parliament, it was time for a candidate with a deep understanding of politics and governance.

“Currently we have enough comedians in parliament and it won’t add value to send another one,” he observed.

He underscored that Kasacca’s expertise would be crucial in tackling Uganda’s complex political landscape.

“You are the only one who can take on this race with knowledge and a firm understanding of the issues Uganda is grappling with,” Mao stated, encouraging Kasacca to take on the challenge with confidence.

Kasacca, who previously worked as a governance expert, said he was driven by a desire to provide leadership that would put Uganda back on track.

“This election is about renewing the struggle for democracy, giving people hope, and advancing the frontiers of democracy,” Kasacca said.

Kasacca’s candidacy will face competition from several candidates, including the NRM’s Faridah Nambi, NUP’s Eriasa Nalukoola, FDC’s Sadat Mukiibi, independent Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba and Hanifah Karadi, among others.

The by-election is set for March 13.
