FDC party to resume ‘defiance’ campaigns

The president of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, Mr Patrick Amuriat, has said they will resume their ‘defiance’ campaigns next year ahead of the 2021 elections.
Speaking at their parallel independence celebrations at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, near Kampala on Tuesday, Mr Amuriat said their focus is to ensure President Museveni does not appear on the 2021 ballot paper.

“If the Constitution had not been changed, Museveni would not qualify to appear on the ballot paper come 2021 since his two term limits had expired. But since we do not have the Constitution, our task is to ensure that he does not appear on the ballot and this is going to be possible with defiance,” Mr Amuriat said.
“We declared 2019 a year of defiance but since it is coming to an end, we are going to engage in the campaign next year. We have noticed that defiance works and if it was not because of it, we could not even be here,” he added.

Mr Amuriat said many Ugandans have been attacking FDC on social media that the party is no longer strong countrywide and their chances of taking power are limited.
However, he said FDC is not weak and will not give up on the fight to remove NRM from power.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga and his deputy Polly Namaye were not available by press time.

However, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said they are ready to block FDC’s ‘defiance’ campaigns. “If any one engages in any illegality, the law shall prevail because we shall not allow that to happen,” Mr Onyango said.
FDC’s defiance campaigns were started by Dr Kizza Besigye, the party’s founding president. The campaigns started with walk-to-work protests where Dr Besigye rallied Ugandans to denounce the prevailing hostile economic conditions in the country.
