Police in southwestern Uganda have arrested five men suspected of carrying out a violent armed robbery that left one man injured and a local businessman robbed of more than Shs23 million.

The incident occurred on the night of April 29 at Mugomberero Trading Centre in Rushenyi Village, Muramba Sub-county, Kisoro District.

Four armed men reportedly stormed a shop owned by Michael Turinayo, shot a shop attendant in the arm, and fled with cash, according to police.

“They fired several bullets into the air to scare off people before making away with the money,” Kisoro District Police Commander Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusha told reporters on Wednesday.

The suspects currently in custody have been identified as Ndishimiye Brandon, Munezero Bashir (alias Sunday Dam), Irankunda Desire, Irankunda Garlad, and Mfitundinda Slivan.

“We are still hunting for other suspects, but we are confident that we have made significant progress in our investigation,” said Kashumbusha.

The shop attendant, Kenneth Mucunguzi, is still recovering after being shot during the robbery.

Police said the suspects would be charged with aggravated robbery once investigations are concluded.

“After investigations are done, the suspects will be taken to court for trial on aggravated robbery cases,” Kashumbusha added.

He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement to strengthen community safety.

“We appeal to the public to work with us to ensure that the investigation is well done,” he said.

The commander also issued a warning to would-be criminals, pledging intensified efforts between security agencies and the judiciary to crack down on violent crime.

“Security agencies are going to work hard with the judicial system to ensure that those people are caught and taken where they deserve to be,” he said.

The case remains under investigation as authorities pursue additional suspects.
