Five dead, seven injured as another truck rams into boda boda riders in Rubaga

Five people died Thursday morning after a truck rammed into boda boda riders at Kabuusu roundabout, Rubaga Division in Kampala, police have said. 
The 8:30am road crash claimed the lives of three boda boda riders; Gerald Ssemata, Semei Ndondo and another only identified as Ssenfuma.
Florence Nansubuga, a passenger on bike and another passenger who’s yet to be identified also died in the crash.

“The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the city mortuary for postmortem examination, while the injured victims were rushed to Mulago Referral Hospital, for treatment,” said traffic police spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima.
She attributed the cause of the accident to the Isuzu ELF truck whose driver, one Gerald Ssembatya, lost control “while speeding from Rubaga road before it rammed into five motorcycles and bicycle that were entering Kabusu roundabout.”  

The Rubaga accident happened just hours after another truck on Wednesday night crashed into Awoja swamp along Soroti –Mbale highway, about 300km east of Kampala, killing five and injuring seven others.
The Soroti Fuso truck was transporting 18 cattle traders from a business trip Kotido en route to Kibuku and Butembo districts where they had planned to sell their merchandise. 

Police stats
The 2021 Uganda Police Annual Crime Report says there was a 42 percent increase in the number of crashes from 12,249 in 2020 to 17,443 in 2021. More than 3,000 crashes were fatal, and 4,616 survived with minor injuries.
The report says on average, Uganda loses approximately 10 people per day due to road crashes.
