Former BoU, IMF economist leaves Eco Bank Board after eight years

  • Prior to serving at this Board, Mr Byekwaso served as the advisor of IMF’s East African Regional Technical Assistance Center (East AAFRIITAC) and the executive director external operations at BoU.

Mr Elias Kasozi Byekwaso who served in different positions and the Central Bank of Uganda (BoU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) has left Eco Bank Uganda after serving on its Board for the last eight years.

Mr Byekwaso, a distinguished economist and financial strategist who served as a non-executive member of Eco Bank between 2016 and 2022 before being appointed the Board Chairperson on Thusday officially handed over to his successor, Mr Richard Munyaneza.

“Serving Ecobank Uganda has been a profound honor. Working alongside such passionate and dedicated professionals committed to Uganda’s and Africa’s growth has been truly inspiring. I am confident the bank will continue to scale greater heights,” he said at a fairwell dinner organised by the bank in Kampala on Thursday December 5, to Honor his services.

Prior to serving at this Board, Mr Byekwaso served as the advisor of IMF’s East African Regional Technical Assistance Center (East AAFRIITAC) and the executive director external operations at BoU.  

During his time at the helm, Mr Kasozi, officials said spearheaded the bank’s strategic reorientation, driving remarkable growth, enhanced profitability, and an expanded customer base.

His leadership, they added has firmly positioned Ecobank Uganda as a leading financial institution in the country.

“Mr Kasozi’s legacy is one of integrity, innovation, and strategic foresight. His leadership guided the bank through critical milestones, including our recapitalization efforts mandated by the Bank of Uganda,” said Ms Grace Muliisa, Managing Director of Ecobank

She added, “His unwavering commitment to operational excellence and financial stability has set the stage for continued success as we pursue our Growth, Transformation, and Returns strategy,”

Mr Kasozi, she further noted brought unparalleled expertise and vision to Ecobank. Recruited as an Independent Non-Executive Director in 2016, he was reappointed in 2020 before assuming the Chairmanship in 2022.
