Former Lwengo woman MP Gertrude Nakabira succumbs to cancer

Former Lwengo District Woman Member of Parliament Gertrude Nakabira Lubega has died.

Nakabira succumbed to cancer on Sunday at St Francis Hospital Nsambya where she has been admitted.

Isaac Ssejoba, the former MP for Bukoto Mid-West constituency and a close friend to the family confirmed her death.

“Our colleague has been sick for a period of close to five years. However she got worse over the last three months and has been receiving treatment at Nsambya hospital,” he said.

“Arrangements are being made to ensure that her body is transported from Nsambya hospital to her home in Lwengo.”  

Nakabira represented Lwengo district in the ninth parliament as the first Woman MP, from 2011 to 2016, when the district had just been carved out of the traditional Masaka district.

In 2016 general election she contested for the Bukoto South Constituency seat which she lost to the incumbent MP Mohammad Muyanja Mbabali.

From 2005 to 2010, she served as the Sembabule District Education Officer.

Having served the nation as a teacher for 35 active years, Nakibira had been a local education consultant in the greater Masaka sub-region.

Florence Kintu, the former Kalungu district Woman MP who served with Nakabira has eulogized the late as a committed team leader who always lived as an example to others.
