Equity Bank Uganda has appointed Gift Shoko as its new Managing Director, following the resignation of Anthony Kituuka in November 2024.

The bank, which is a subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings Plc confirmed Shoko appointment on Tuesday, noting that “it’s subject to regulatory approval.”

Shoko previously served as the Executive Director of Equity Bank Uganda.

With more than 26 years of experience in the banking sector, he will be expected “to bring extensive expertise in commercial multi-regional banking and leadership across Southern and Eastern Africa.”

He holds a Bachelor of Business Studies and Computer Science degree from the University of Zimbabwe, an MBA in Banking and Finance from CIMA in Nicosia, Cyprus, and numerous certifications in banking, finance, and leadership.

Before joining Equity bank, Shoko was the NCBA Group Director for Regional Business, overseeing all the group’s banking subsidiaries across East Africa.

Earlier in his career, he served as CEO of Commercial Bank of Africa (Tanzania) Limited for five years, where he played a pivotal role in driving the bank's growth.

His banking career began at Nedbank Zimbabwe, where he participated in the Graduate Management Training Program before advancing through various senior management positions.

Shoko also previously served as the Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Executive Officer at Trust Holdings Limited (THL), a diversified financial services group listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.

During his tenure, he successfully restructured the company and led its re-listing on the stock exchange, according to Equity Bank Uganda’s Tuesday statement

With extensive experience in corporate governance, Shoko has held positions on various boards across Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi.

“Shoko brings with him a wealth of experience, a proven track record of leadership, and expertise in banking, corporate strategy, and digital transformation. His background aligns perfectly with our mission to continue delivering innovative and inclusive financial solutions to our customers," , Equity Bank Uganda Chairman Mark Ocitti held.

He added: “We are confident that under Shoko's leadership, Equity Bank Uganda will strengthen its commitment to enhancing customer experience and expanding our reach.”
