A 35-year-old woman who had been on the run after being captured in a viral video torturing a four-year-old girl in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, has been arrested in Kabale District.

Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, confirmed that Precious Tumuhirwe, was intercepted in Kabale on Saturday and detained at Kabale Central Police Station.

She will soon be transferred to Kira Municipality for further investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday in Kikonko Zone, Namataba Cell, Kirinya Ward.

Investigations show that the child’s father, Michael Mwesigwa, has been the primary caregiver since separating from the child’s mother two years ago. Tumuhirwe had been employed as the family’s housemaid for four years.

“She is currently detained at Kabale Central Police Station and will be transferred to Kira Municipality, where the crime took place,” Mr Owoyesigyire stated.

Mr Owoyesigyire reassured the public that the police are committed to ensuring justice for the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital.

“The victim is now off oxygen, and her condition is improving,” he added.

Police authorities have emphasized their commitment to securing justice for the victim and condemned all forms of violence against children. The incident has highlighted the growing issue of child abuse by domestic workers, with calls for the public to report any suspected abuse.

Kabale District Police Commander, SP Charles Okello, confirmed the arrest and the plan to transport Tumuhirwe to Kampala for further investigation.

Both Owoyesigyire and Okello Charles condemned all forms of violence against children and urged the public to report any suspected abuse to the nearest police station.

“We remain committed to ensuring justice is served,” Owoyesigyire emphasised.
