What you need to know:

  • A mob overpowered Mr Kazoba, forcefully taking the suspect from him before lynching him.

A 35-year-old man was lynched and his body mutilated by a mob for allegedly stealing Shs300,000 in Nyakasharara Cell, Kihembe Parish, Kihembe Sub County, Kanungu District.

The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Elly Maate, confirmed the incident to Monitor on January 22, describing it as "a case of murder by mob justice."

"The case was reported to Kanyantorogo Police Post by Mr. Elininious Tumwesigire, 45, the GISO of Kihembe Town Council and a resident of Nyakasharara Cell," Mr Maate stated.

He identified the deceased as Joseph, approximately 35 years old, the son of Kembabazi, who had no known place of residence.

Police investigations revealed that on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at around 2:00 PM, the deceased allegedly trespassed into the home of Ms Beatrice Bajumwa and stole Shs 300,000.

“It is alleged that the deceased entered Ms. Bajumwa’s home and took Shs 300,000. An alarm was raised, drawing residents, including army officers on guard duty,” Mr Maate elaborated.

Joseph was apprehended and handed over to the LC1 Chairperson of Kihembe Central, Mr Frank Kazoba.

However, a mob later overpowered Mr Kazoba, forcefully taking the suspect from him before lynching him.

“After killing the suspect, the mob mutilated his body, cutting it into pieces,” Mr Maate revealed.

Police visited and documented the crime scene and transported the body to Kanungu Katate Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. Statements were recorded from key witnesses at the scene.

“No suspects have been arrested yet,” Mr Maate said. He assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the mob action.
