Police in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District in Eastern Uganda, are investigating the circumstances under which a 29-year-old Kenyan woman died after she was reportedly found unconscious in a lodge.
Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson, IP Moses Mugwe, said Hodhen Abdi, of Somali origin, was on July 4, 2025, pronounced dead at Hope For Life Drug Shop, located in Amoni B' Cell, Malaba Town Council, after she was rushed there for treatment.
"Hodhen Abdi, a Somali national and resident of Garisa, Kenya, is said to have travelled to Uganda and checked into Safari Guest House in Malaba on the evening of July 3, 2025," Mr Mugwe said.
Mr Mugwe said preliminary findings indicate that on the following morning at about 11am, a cleaner found Hodhen unconscious in her room at the lodge. She was immediately rushed to a nearby drug shop for medical attention, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
“There were no visible physical injuries on the body,” said Mr Mugwe, adding that the body was found lying in one of the rooms at the drug shop.
Police say Hodhen had visited relatives in Malaba, Uganda.
"Her relatives informed investigators that she had a history of diabetes, which may be linked to the cause of death," he said.
A team of detectives and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) visited and documented the scene, and statements were recorded from witnesses to aid ongoing inquiries.
Her body was taken to Tororo General Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem as investigations continue.
