What you need to know:
- Traffic police have advised the public to avoid routes leading to or around Kyambogo University during the institution's 4-day graduation ceremony starting December 10.
Over 11,000 students from Kyambogo University have been cleared to graduate in different disciplines during the institution’s 20th graduation ceremony.
Addressing journalists at the university offices, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka revealed that at least 11,721 students, including 6,017 females and 5,704 males, will graduate during the four-day ceremony starting December 10 at the main campus in Banda, Kampala.
Previous Kyambogo University graduations have traditionally lasted three days.
“Last year, the university graduated 10,926 graduates. This year, the numbers have risen by 795,” he said.
“So, we are deviating from our normal practice of a three-day graduation because of the large number of students. We do not want to keep parents waiting until late as we did previously,” Prof Katunguka explained.
The university will confer at least 8 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students and award 219 master’s degrees in various fields.
On December 10, 3,146 students from the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation and the School of Management and Entrepreneurship will graduate.
On the second day, 11, 2,699 students from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, School of Vocational Studies, School of Arts and Industrial Design, and Faculty of Agriculture will follow.
On day three, 3,242 students from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, School of Computing and Information Science, and School of Built Environment will graduate.
The final day will see 2,634 students from the School of Education, Faculty of Engineering, and the Institute of Distance Education and E-learning receive their degrees.
Prof Katunguka confirmed that preparations for the graduation are complete but discouraged those intent on attending from carrying large bags due to security concerns.
Meanwhile, all the top five performers at the university are female, led by Grace Rukwanzi with a CGPA of 4.9, followed by Winnie Nakalema (4.86), Bridget Kabugho (4.85), Edith Chelimo (4.83), and Sarah Nakubulwa (4.82).
But Justine Okweanga, with a CGPA of 4.81, will be recognized as the top male performer.

“Graduation attendees are urged to adhere to traffic guidelines,” Wambesyo said.
Only guests with stickers will be allowed access to the university.
Kampala Metropolitan EastRegional Police Commander Jonathan Musinguzi said: “Police and sister security agencies are fully prepared to ensure peaceful celebrations. Security personnel will be deployed for eight days to secure the venue before, during, and after the event.”
He called for vigilance in the wake of terrorism threats in the festive season.
