Lango cabinet appointment: Women get ‘raw deal’ as men share juicy positions

The appointment of ministers under Lango Cultural Institution or Tekwaro Lango has indicated that women have been given a raw deal in the cabinet slots.

Out of the 80 existing cabinet positions, women fetched only seven as men shared amongst themselves all the juicy positions, according to the analysis by the Monitor.

Interestingly, the Ministry of Family Life and Gender is even headed by a man, Mr Joe Otim, a retired police officer. 

Nonetheless, the cabinet list released on Wednesday evening (February 5, 2025) shows that Eng Dr Michael Moses Odongo Okune, the Paramount Chief (Won Nyaci) of Lango, appointed five women to be his state ministers.

For instance, Ms Agnes Akello, the former Resident District Commissioner (RDC), is the state minister for Relief while Ms Josephine Omara Olili is the Minister of State for Agribusiness. 

Ms Loy Olope, is the Minister of State for Peace Building, and Ms Carolyn Edonga is the Minister of State for Women in Development. 

Ms Janet Atidi is the Minister of State for Children’s Affairs, while the Minister of State for Youth is Mr Calvin Atine. 

Influential individuals in the country swept all the juicy positions. Some of them include Dr Willy Okullo, an associate professor in the Department of Physics at Kyambogo University, who has been appointed as the Prime Minister. 

The position of 2nd Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Wealth Creation has been given to Brig Gen Bosco Omule. 

The Member of Parliament of Maruzi County in Apac District, Mr Maxwell Akora, is the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister in charge ombudsman. 

The 4th Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Oil and Mineral Resources in Lango is Mzee Amulaferi Ongwen Okao. 

Mr Bosco Ogwang Edola, Lira University’s chairperson of Planning and Investment Committee, has been appointed as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Revenue. His friend Mr Geoffrey Etop, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) treasurer of Lira District and Lira City tycoon, is the state minister for Revenue.

Mr George Ojwang Opota is the minister of Education and Sports, while Dr Adams Makmot Kibwanga is the institution’s Attorney General.
The NRM publicity secretary of Alebtong, Mr Patrick Okullu Oken is the minister of Information and Public Education. 

Mr Geoffrey Okwir Gunya, a prominent businessman, is the minister of Reparation and Compensation, while Mr Joseph Obote Otiti is the minister of Tourism and Museum. 

Mr Simon Odepe is the First Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO) and Cooperative.

The former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party chairman in Lira, Mr Joel Agabi, is the minister of Forestry, Water and Environment.  
 
Mr Jerubabel Opio Okori has been appointed to head the Ministry of Land Rights and Management, while Mr Zulu Okello is the State Minister for Land Conflict Resolution. 

Also, Mr Patrick Ojok Apala is the Minister of State for Land for Development and Public Project, and Mr Lawrence Okello is the minister of Trade, Industry and Innovation. Canon Moses Ogwal is the minister of State for Skilling and Re-tooling.

Mr Isaac Opio Opeo, the assistant RDC of Otuke, is the minister of Disaster Preparedness, while Mr Lamech Obong is the Preparedness state minister.

Mr Yuventino Obong is the Minister of State for Water for Production, and the minister of Health and Public Hygiene is Mr Alex Ario. Mr Ocen Abia is the minister of state for Health.

Mr Patrick Ogwang Anam is the minister of Employment and Labour, while the minister of Public Works and Voluntarism is Eng Richard Enen Okello.

Foreign Affairs ministry is headed by Mr Joseph Odongo Bongonyinge, who is deputised by Mr Sam Paul Ogwang Alunyu. 

Canon Richard Ogwang Odyero is the minister of Peace Building and Government Liaison.

Mr Moses Ongeng is the minister of Disability and Social Development, while Mr Paul Ogwal Olule is the minister of state for Counselling, Psychosocial Support and Mindset Change. 

Mr Joseph Olet Magezi commonly known as Mr Build is the minister of state for Business. 

The Executive Secretariat is headed by Dr Morris Chris Ongom, the director of Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Lango Sub-region. 

Dr Ongom is deputised by Ms Beatrice Okello, while Mr Edwin Odurluru is the head of protocol. 

Council Patrick Okwir is the spokesperson of Tekwaro Lango, while Mr Hamza Okello is the Private Principal Secretary to Won Nyaci.  

Ms Rehema Apio is the Ambassador to the United States of America, while Mr Pius Ojok is the Ambassador to South Sudan.
