Deceased: Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Lira, Karim Mwase

Police in Iganga District in Eastern Uganda are investigating the circumstances under which the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Lira, Karim Mwase, died after his body was discovered dumped along the Iganga-Bugiri highway on Sunday night.

Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson, Michael Kafayo, said Mwase’s vehicle—registration number UBH 449L—was at around 11 pm on May 11, 2025 found abandoned with its hazard lights flashing in Bukaboli village, Nakalama Parish, Nakalama Sub County in Iganga District.

Preliminary reports indicate that Mwase had travelled to Iganga to attend a meeting convened by Iganga RDC Sadala Wandera, which was attended by several RDCs, their deputies and assistants who hail from Bugweri District. The meeting was reportedly partly intended for Wandera to declare his intention to contest for the Bugweri County parliamentary seat.

"During the gathering, Wandera allegedly collapsed and was rushed to Imperial Hospital for medical attention. The meeting was subsequently called off, and guests, including Mwasse Karim, proceeded to Sanah Hotel for dinner—marking the last time he was seen alive," Mr Kafayo said.
His body was discovered after police got reports of a vehicle abandoned on Iganga-Bugiri highway.
According to Mr Kafayo, the vehicle had earlier been lent to Mwase by the Assistant RDC of Bugweri.
"Upon receiving information about the abandoned vehicle, Kakaire rushed to the scene and towed it to Iganga Central Police Station for safekeeping, “he said.

He said police later discovered Mwase’s body a few meters from where the vehicle had been parked.

“He had visible injuries on his face, and blood was oozing from his mouth and nose,” the police spokesperson added in a statement.

A team led by the Busoga East Regional Police Commander, SSP Abasi Ssenyonjo, together with CID officers, intelligence personnel, and the canine unit, visited the scene.

He said the police dog tracked a scent for about one kilometre along the highway but later lost the trail.

The body was transferred to Iganga Hospital mortuary for autopsy as investigations continue to establish the motive and those behind the killing.
Meanwhile, police have opened a murder case file at Iganga Central Police Station.
