President Museveni has appointed Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice.
Until his appointment Thursday evening, Justice Zeija was the Principal Judge. He now replaces Justice Richard Buteera who retires in April this year when he clocks 70 years.
According to the press statement released on Thursday night by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), a government body mandated with the recruitment and disciplining of errant judicial officers, the President has also appointed eight justices of Court of Appeal/ Constitutional Court, one Justice of the Supreme Court and 21 judges of the High Court but in Acting capacity for a period two years from the date of assumption of duty.
The commission also said that Justice Bukirwa Faridah has been re-appointed in an acting capacity as a High Court Judge after disciplinary proceedings against her were concluded and cleared.
"The President in exercise of his powers under Article 142 (1), and (2) of the Constitution has appointed the deputy Chief Justice, one Justice of the Supreme Court and eight justices of the Court of Appeal," read in part the statement of the JSC.
Adding: "In addition, H.E has also appointed 21 judges of the High Court in acting capacity,"
The appointments were part of last activities conducted by the 6th commission led by Justice Benjamin Kabiito whose term in office ended on January 21, this year.
With the appointment of Justice Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice, it means that the position of the Principal Judge, who is the administrative head of the High Court is vacant and needs to be filled up as soon as possible.
