The Njeru Municipality authorities have temporarily closed two factories in Njeru municipality for not following the standard operating procedures that were put in place by the Ministry of Health to control the spread of Covid-19.
Leeko Industries Limited and Pramukh Steel have been shut for being reluctant in enforcing the Covid-19 guidelines while operating.
According to Mr Phillip Sserunjoogi, the Njeru Municipality health inspector and head of Covid-19 task force, the factories in question also did not have functional sanitary facilities.
“These two factories had no washing facilities, no adequate disinfectant, employees were not putting on masks and the sanitary facilities were in a very poor state,” Mr Sserunjoogi said.
“We recommend that they at least close temporarily, so that they can put up these facilities because it is putting a high risk for the spread of Covid-19 and other communicable diseases,” he added.
This comes at a time when Uganda’s cases for Covid-19 are surging, due to the high level of complacency in the community, following the partial easing of the lockdown, which saw many return to their businesses.
The total number of confirmed cases as of October 22, 2020, stand at 11,041.
