Mbarara Catholic Archbishop Lambert Bainomugisha has decried education that does not transform Ugandan communities describing it as “meaningless.”

The prelate, who is also the chancellor of the University of St Joseph Mbarara (USJM), said “education should not be for personal advancement but to serve others.”

“Education becomes relevant by serving and transforming communities. Be agents of change and serve others in truth, justice and love,” he said while officiating at the 4th graduation USJM on Saturday in Mbarara City.

He added: “Some of you (graduands) will remain unemployed when there are opportunities in areas you are called hard to reach because you want to serve your own interests. Be an example of Jesus Christ who sacrificed his life for the love of mankind.”

Archbishop Bainomugisha challenged graduands to find diverse solutions to problems faced by humanity. Further, he called on the graduands to exhibit high levels of morality.

“There are many graduates with equivalent qualifications like you but what can make you have an edge over them are the values of morality and integrity,” he highlighted.

University Vice chancellor Rev Fr Deus Karemire told gradaunds that Uganda’s job scarcity should wake them not to despise any opportunity.

“The skills and competences you have now are to navigate the whole world, do not undermine any job opportunity that you land on because it is not in line with your profession, be strategic and the dream job will be found when you are already earning a living somewhere else,” Fr Karemire advised.

Jovita Kyarisiima, an employee with Nation Media Group (NMG) was among the 160 students who graduated in several disciplines.

“This is a key step of my employer's (NMG) mission to positively influence society through informing and educating the masses,” Kyarisiima said after being awarded.
