Mr Ian Kufuko, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer was on Thursday evening declared the new Kyambogo University guild president after he beat two other candidates in a hotly contested race.
According to the official election results released by Raymond Byomuhangi, the university’s Electoral Commission General Secretary, Mr Kafuko garnered a total of 3, 340 votes while his opponents; Mr Julius Nsubuga (FDC) and Proscovia Nantege (DP) got 2,774 and 207 votes respectively.
The evidently elated Kafuko, a third year student of Bachelor of Land Economics pledged to work together with the other contestants towards the students’ welfare.
"I believe in inclusive leadership.I intend to reach out to my fellow contestants despite our political differences so that we can positively re-brand Kyambogo University together. My first priorities in office will be to tackle the issue of sanitation and furniture," he said.
Mr Alfred Akankwasa the Officer in Charge of Kyambogo police said that the elections were generally free and fair despite the voting process going beyond the stipulated time into the night due to the large number of students who turned up to cast their votes.
"Security was available to protect all students who participated in the elections and we are yet to register any complaints of vote rigging. Up to now, the atmosphere is calm and we do not expect any incidences," Akankwasa said.
However, efforts by this newspaper to reach the other contestants for comment were futile as all their known contacts were switched off by press time.

"The new guild president is expected to be officially sworn into office in two weeks time after election of the speaker and guild representative Councillors," Mr Byomuhangi said.
Earlier, one of the students was reportedly stabbed as campaigns turned rowdy. Mr Hamidu Muambe, a first year student, sustaining injuries after he was allegedly stabbed in the back with a knife on Monday.
Consequently, Mr Gerald Mugabi, the university’s Guild prime minister was arrested as a suspect but released on police bond a day after, when students stormed Jinja Road Police Station.
