  • This move is part of the party's preparations for the 2026 general elections.

The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party in Bugiri District has taken a significant step towards strengthening its presence in the region by selecting 360 candidates to contest for LC1 chairperson positions in 485 villages across the district.

This move is part of the party's preparations for the 2026 general elections.

According to Mr Andrew Kiza Kaluya, Chairperson for Mobilisation in the Eastern Region, additional members would be selected to fill all positions and further bolster the party's structure. "We are not doing this in Bugiri district alone, but it's a countrywide program aimed at challenging the ruling NRM party in the 2026 general elections," he emphasized.

Mr. Kaluya highlighted the strategic importance of capturing lower-level positions, noting that success at these levels would pave the way for the party's victory in the presidential seat come 2026. He urged party members to maintain peace and ensure the protection of their votes from potential rigging by opponents.

Internal unity within the party was also stressed, with Mr. Kaluya cautioning against infighting among members, particularly among contestants, which could jeopardize the party's electoral prospects. "Let's agree and support one person and mobilize for our party flag bearers, ensuring we serve as examples to other parties," he advised.

The District Party Chairperson, Mr. John Ntalo, echoed these sentiments, calling for collective efforts as the party strives for power. He particularly encouraged youths to participate in upcoming youth positions, which would not only give them leadership roles but also access to youth funds. "Our youths aren't benefiting from youth programs, so we need to take leadership roles and secure our share to boost household incomes," Mr. Ntalo stated.

In a bid to strengthen the party's advisory capacity, Mr. Muhammed Kazito, the former District Chairperson of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, was appointed as the party adviser for NUP in Bugiri district. Mr. Kazito emphasized the role of youths as today's leaders, urging them to work diligently towards transforming the country through peace and job creation.

He also advised against the use of violence in the pursuit of power, recommending that the party explore alternative, peaceful means to achieve its goals. Mr. Kazito's appointment was welcomed by Mr. Macelino Egesa Mangeni, the NUP Chairperson for Bugiri Municipality, who praised Mr. Kazito's integrity and leadership background.

In a notable development, Mr. Abubaker Mukama, a former NRM candidate who ran for Member of Parliament in Bukooli County Central during the 2021 general elections, has defected to NUP. Mr. Mukama has announced his intention to contest for the same parliamentary seat on the NUP ticket, citing divisions within the NRM party as a key reason for his switch.
