Over 200 pilgrims from Kenya have arrived in Uganda ahead of the annual Uganda Martyrs' Day celebrations at Namugongo.
The pilgrims, drawn from the dioceses of Kisii, Nayitiri, and Kisoko in Bungoma, crossed into Uganda through the Busia and Malaba border points.
Ms Mary Stella Wabuye, a pilgrim from Nayitiri, said they set off on Sunday after Mass and spent the night at Osiya Parish Church in Tororo before proceeding to Busitema in Busia District.
“I've heard that people receive blessings after visiting Namugongo for Martyrs' Day prayers, and that's what inspired me. I also hope to collect holy water to take back home,” she said.
Mr John Opondo, who is leading 67 pilgrims from Kisoko, said they crossed into Uganda and spent the night at St Jude Parish Church in Busia. Their journey will take them through Buwuni, Busowa, Iganga, Jinja, and Lugazi, with plans to arrive at Namugongo on May 29.
“We want to arrive early enough to rest and be fresh for the celebrations,” Opondo explained.
However, Mr Alex Asiimwe, the officer in charge of traffic in Busia, cautioned the pilgrims against walking at night due to safety concerns.
“Walking at night is dangerous. Please travel during daylight hours to avoid accidents and security risks,” he advised.
He also stressed the importance of wearing reflective jackets. “A driver can see you from afar when you wear a reflector. Please make sure you have them on at all times,” Mr Asiimwe added.
