  • The exams will conclude on Tuesday.

A total of 6,4191 candidates have been cleared to sit the 2024 Islamic Primary Leaving Examination (IPLE) Board, under the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC),which kicks off on Monday .

The two-day exercise will be conducted at 360 centres across the country.

Last year, a total of 5,311 candidates sat the exams at 291 centres.

While   flagging off the distribution of exam materials at the UMSC headquarters in Old Kampala on Friday, Dr Sheikh Ziyadi Swaleh Lubanga, the UMSC Director of Sharia, hailed stakeholders for enabling Islamic education in the country.

“I extend special thanks to the IPLE Board for their diligent efforts in managing Islamic education, safeguarding examination integrity, and professionally handling results,” he added.

Speaking earlier, Hajj Mahmood Kateregga Sebuganda, the chairperson of the National Education Committee, cautioned all education stakeholders against exam malpractices.

Sheikh Ismail Kyeyune, the IPLE Board secretary, outlined the examination timetable explaining that candidates will start December 2, 2024, with the Quran Paper (Quran recitation and memorisation) in the morning and Al Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, the exams will conclude with Luhhatul Arabiyyah (Arabic language and grammar) in the morning and Attarbiyyat Islamiyat (Islamic ethics, history and traditions of the prophet) in the afternoon.

Due to the current leadership wrangles in the Muslim community in Uganda- which gave birth to two rival leaderships– one based at Old Kampala led by Mufti Shaban Mubajje and another at Kibuli Hill headed by Supreme Mufti Shaban Galabuzi, candidates in schools whose administrators subscribe to the Kibuli parallel Muslim administration sit exams set by Uganda Quran Schools Association.

A total of 7,000 candidates under (UQSA) already sat their final exams in August at 284 centres.

According to Sheikh Ahmada Yahaya Lukwago, the chairperson of UQSA, they organise their IPLE in second term to allow candidates doing dual curriculum (Islamic theology and secular education) enough time to prepare for national PLE set by the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb).
