Police have launched an investigation into the death of a businessman that took place on Monday in Masajja A Cell, Masajja Division, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.
The victim, Charles Ssengooba, 41, was attacked by unidentified assailants at around 9:30pm while returning home from his beer depot in Masajja A Zone. The attack occurred in a secluded, dark area approximately 200 metres from Masajja Main Road and about 150 meters from his residence.
“The police are currently investigating a case of suspected murder and robbery incidents which occurred about 100 metres from Ssengooba’s home in a dark spot,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.
A team from the police homicide desk, along with scene-of-crime officers, visited the crime scene and transported the body to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem as investigations continue.
Mr Onyango confirmed the development, adding that detectives from Katwe Police Station recorded statements from witnesses who were the first to respond.
He added that they would rely on footage from neighbours to help with the investigations.
No suspect has been arrested so far.
The area where the incident occurred has become increasingly insecure, with rising incidents of criminal gangs on boda bodas targeting businessmen carrying large sums of money.
However, in contrast, Ssengooba was allegedly attacked by gangs on foot, who fled with an unspecified amount of money and a phone valued at Shs500,000.
The suspects are believed to be part of a series of robberies in Makindye Zone, where gangs specifically target individuals transporting cash from their business premises.
According to witnesses, the deceased was struck on the head with a heavy blunt object, possibly a paver or weighing stone, before stealing his belongings.
The robbers fled the scene, leaving Ssengooba unconscious. A woman, who requested anonymity for fear of victimisation, called a boda boda which rushed him to a nearby clinic for first aid. The clinic later referred him to St Francis Hospital, Nsambya.
At Nsambya, doctors recommended a computed tomography scan to be conducted at Nakasero Hospital. However, Ssengooba died before he could be moved.
