Science teachers told to focus on output, not only money

Science teachers have been urged to focus on output rather than only the salary enhancement that was honoured to them.
 “Do not look at only the money but focus on the output also," Mr Julius Opasso, the head teacher Teso College Aloet who doubles as the chairperson regional management committee Secondary Science and Mathematics Teachers (SESEMAT), said during the refresher training course of science teachers at the school.
 
The training began on January 14, 2025 with over 550 participants, mostly teachers of science and Mathematics for Teso sub region.

According to Mr Opasso, some teachers are only looking at the salary that was enhanced to them and forgetting to concentrate on producing results.
 
He also said some of the teachers are not well versed with the new curriculum and urged them to interest themselves in the training as it will help boost their teaching.
 
He said that school managers need to subscribe the SESEMAT programme saying that out of 250 schools only 150 had so far subscribed.
 
 Mr Paul Musoke, the technical supervisor of the SESEMAT programme at the Ministry of education and sports said teachers are facing challenges in assessing students in the new lower secondary curriculum.
 
Mr Musoke said that the training is aimed at improving the teaching of the new lower secondary curriculum because most challenges were faced during assessments.
 
“There is a need for teachers to learn to develop the activities of integration so that learners can be exposed to any activity of integration which would make assessments meaningful," Mr Musoke said.
 
According to him, teachers are failing to set items in line with the competent based training and therefore urged teachers to utilize the knowledge and skills they will gain from the training to help learners.
 
“Utilize this time to gain each skill, knowledge so that you go back and do the needful because all we need is better results," Mr Musoke added.
 
Mr Patrick Emokor, the Principal Education officer, encouraged teachers to desist from multiple loans which has deterred on service delivery.
