  • Mr Laban Muhabwe who had been nominated on Independent ticket, withdrew from the race this week.

Mr Laban Muhabwe, one of the two people who were nominated to compete for Sheema  Distrcit chairperson (LC5) seat, has withdrawn from the race, giving a leeway for  Ms Jemimah  Tumwijukye Buhanda, to become the next district chairperson.

Mr Muhabwe who had been nominated on Independent ticket, withdrew from the race on Tuesday.

He had earlier been defeated by Ms Buhanda and other two others in National Resistance Movement party primary election on September 11.

“I made consultations with all stakeholders and people of Sheema, and for that matter I have decided to step down,” Mr Muhabwe said.

He added that Sheema has been facing a problem of division, especially during elections, and that his withdrawal from the race will solve the issue.

Ms Buhanda said she will live to respect Mr Muhabwe’s decision of  trying to forge unity among the people of Sheema.

“We must learn from the past mistakes if we want to forge a way forward. All the people of Sheema need is development and  nothing else,” Ms Buhanda said.

She added that she will work with everyone for the good of the district.
The district registrar, Mr John Bosco Nuwagaba, who  met Mr Muhabwe and Ms Buhanda at his office on Tuesday, confirmed that development.

“Officially, Sheema has the next chairperson because one of the two candidates has pulled out,” Mr Nuwagaba said.

Ms Buhanda, 67,  once served as the lady councillor for Kagango Sub-county and Kabwohe/Itendero Town council in Bushenyi district council from 2001-2010. She also served as deputy speaker during the same period.

When Sheema was carved out of Bushenyi in 2010,  she  became a member of Sheema district council up to 2011

Ms Buhanda was born in 1953 in Nyabushabi in Kyanamira Sub- county Kabale district.

She attended Nyabushabi Primary School and Kigezi High School. After which she joined  Buwarasa Primary Teachers’ College in Mbale before enrolling  for a  diploma in guidance and counseling at Ankole Western University in Sheema in 2014.
