Entebbe Municipality Mayor Fabrice Rulinda has revealed that the construction of the 6.1 km road network from the Katabi traffic lights to Kitinda link in Katabi Town Council is set to create an alternative route access to Entebbe, easing traffic on the busy Kampala- Entebbe expressway.

“We have seen times when that Kitubulu area gets flooded, people get stuck, when we have huge conferences in the country, the road is so busy and is blocked most times, we hope this alternative route will help ease transportation. Currently, the right of way is at 92 per cent with 179 people out of the 194 consenting,” Mr Rulinda said during the contract signing for the multi-jurisdiction Shs 40.8 billion 6.1 Km Ssebugwawo Bunono- Abayita Ababiri – Kitinda link road works with China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd (CJIC) at the Municipal council offices on Wednesday.

“We are very cognisant of the fact that we must have the right of way done completely, which we know we will get. We ask our people not to be misled by the ones who claim that there is compensation for them to get out of the way,” he said.
Mr Rulinda added, “This is a project that helps the community, there is no budget for compensation, our focus should be on how this will help the community, and we ask that we are mindful of how we affect the residents”.
The undersecretary Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Ms Monica Edemachu, urged the contractor to make sure some sections of the road are completed as other works are ongoing during the multi-year project construction.

“This will support Entebbe municipality to earn and be able to fund you as you do your implementation, as the ministry of Kampala, we are committed to make sure we fast track implementation process by the time we go for mid-term review which is this year and the coming financial year in August, September,” she said.

The Municipal Engineer, Ms Betty Nanfuka, said the construction works will take 18 months to complete, including mobilisation.
“We have two sections---from the Katabi Junction to Abayita Ababiri stretches 4.7 kms and an additional 1.4 kms. So, it's a total of 6.1 kms in 18 months at a cost of Shs 40.8 billion,” she said.

The contractor CJIC representative, Mr Alison Kyambadde, said the company will deliver world-class quality works at the end of the project.
“We have done several projects outside Uganda, because this is a big company. We've done projects in Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique, Congo, and some of them are even ongoing, quite bigger than this, we assure you that we are going to deliver, he said”.
