Sub County chief arrested over theft of teacher’s Shs 54m retirement package

Police in Kapchorwa District have arrested the LCIII Chairperson of Binyinyi Town council in Kween District on allegations of stealing Shs 54 million from a teacher, who had just returned from the United States of America (USA). 

It is alleged that Francis Tiken stole the money which was part of Ms Anna Sange’s retirement package two weeks ago.

Ms Sange who had been working as a teacher in the United States is a resident of Kapchorwa municipality in Kapchorwa District. 

Police said Mr Tiken was on Wednesday arrested in Mbale where he had been hiding and transferred to Kapchorwa police station.

Mr Fred Mark Chesang, the Sipi region spokesperson said he allegedly stole the money from Ms Sange on their way from Entebbe Airport wher he had picked her.

 “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect stole the money from Ms Sange while on their way from Entebbe airport where he had picked her,” Ms Sange said.

Ms Sange told Daily Monitor that Mr Tiken volunteered to pick her from the airport but along the way, he stole her money. 

“He came to pick me from the airport after I returned from the USA. I trusted him because he is a family friend,” she said.

She explained that she only found out that the money had been stolen moments after she arrived home on that fateful day.

“When I reached home, I found that my money was missing. I tried to ask him but he feigned ignorance and yet he is the only one, who knew where I had kept the bag which had my money,” she said.

Police said he would be arraigned in court and charged accordingly.

Mr.Chesang told this reporter that Tiken denied the allegations saying he only drove Ms Sange from Entebbe.

"The suspect has denied having taken Ms Sange's money but we are still interrogating him as we continue with the investigations," he said.
