Thieves on Wednesday night broke into St. Phillips Cathedral in Moroto town and made off with items whose value is yet to be established.

The thieves, estimated to be 13, stole a hi-tech public address system, computers, speakers, stabilizers and music instruments such as guitars, among others.

They also drank nine bottles of altar wine, which forced one of them to sleep behind the church vestry till 6.00am.

John Olinga, a member of the laity, says one of the thieves was found on the vestry floor sleeping. Mr Olinga, who had gone for morning prayers, says that the watchman woke up the thief, but did not arrest him. He escaped shortly after.

John Charles Loumo, a Warden at the Cathedral, says the thieves broke a padlock to gain entry to the room.

The officer in charge of the crime desk at Moroto Central Police Station, John Omwony, says police already has a lead, and adds that the suspects could be part of a gang terrorizing residents in the municipality and it’s suburbs.

This is not the first time thieves have raided places of worship in Karamoja. At the beginning of this year unknown persons broke into Tokora Pentecostal Church and took away a new public address system.
