  • "I am honoured for this 3-year term and grateful for the chance to contribute to global navigation advancement."

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority's Director General, Mr Fred K. Bamwesigye has been appointed by the global Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO) as a member at large on the CANSO Global Executive Committee.

This was during the 29th CANSO Annual General Meeting held in Lisbon, Portugal on May 15, 2025, on the sidelines of the Airspace World 2025.

Mr Bamwesigye was nominated by CANSO Africa and appointed unanimously by CANSO Global. He replaces Dr Muhammad Mousa, the former DG ASECNA as member at large on the CANSO Global Executive Committee.

"I am honoured for this 3-year term and grateful for the chance to contribute to global navigation advancement," Mr Bamwesigye said.

The CANSO Executive Committee is the governing Board of CANSO and is accountable for the overall performance of CANSO, including the appointment of the Director General, approving the budgets, and reviewing and approving policy.

It is composed of the five regional CEO Committee Chairs from each of CANSO’s five regions (Ex Officio Members), five Members at Large - elected at the AGM, and two Members representing the Associate Members also elected at the AGM. Ex Officio Members serve for one year and the others for three years.

Earlier on in November, 2023, Mr Bamwesigye  was appointed as the Chairman of the Regional Aviation Safety Group - African and Indian Ocean (RASG-AFI)  for a two-year term, effective November 9, 2023. The election took place during back-to-back International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) meetings in Cotonou, Benin.

Bamwesigye's leadership role in RASG-AFI was then hailed as signifying Uganda's commitment to regional aviation safety and cooperation, particularly in areas like shared expertise, harmonized oversight, and mutual assistance.
