Uganda Technical College student found on Bushenyi-Mbarara road dead

Police in Bushenyi District in Western Uganda are investigating how a 25-year-old student of Uganda Technical College-Kahaya ended up dead after his body was found lying in a pool of blood on the roadside.
Police said residents of Kahaya Village, Rwentuha Town Council in Bushenyi District found Vincent Kawesi’s body on the Bushenyi-Mbarara highway on Wednesday, March 19.
"We received information from well-wishers that the body of Vincent Kawesi, a student at Uganda Technical College Bushenyi commonly known as Kahaya was found lying in a pool of blood," the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, Mr Marcial Tumusiime said on Thursday morning.
Preliminary information indicates that Kawesi in the evening of March 18, 2025 left the college for an outing but never returned as expected.
However, the following day at around 07:30 pm, his body was found lying on the Bushenyi - Mbarara roadside at Kahaya village along by the residents.
Mr Tumusiime said the body was conveyed to Kampala International Teaching Hospital for postmortem as inquiries into his suspected murder continue.
However, the college, in a press statement said Kawesi had been attending classes at the institution illegally.
“The deceased applied to join the college and was admitted to offer a National Diploma in Water Engineering (NDWE) during the 2024-2025 intake. However, our records show that the late Kaweesi did not enrol with college and the management has just learned that he has been stealthily accessing the college facilities......." reads part of the Thursday statement.
Uganda Technical College – Bushenyi was founded in 1956 as Kahaya Memorial Rural Trade School by the then Ankole Kingdom Government. In 1974, it was elevated to Kahaya Technical School and in 1982 upgraded to Bushenyi Technical Institute with a standard entry requirement of O’level. In 1984, the College was further elevated to a technical college and renamed Uganda Technical College Bushenyi admitting both O’ and A’level students.
The college offers a variety of hands on courses such as mechanical engineering, civil engineering, water engineering, architecture, ceramics , electrical engineering, ICT and many short courses.
In their latest annual crime report, police said a total of 4,329 cases (representing a 1.9 percent of the total reported cases in the year) reported to Police by the end of 2024 were due to homicides, compared to 4,248 cases reported in 2023, giving a 1.9 percent increase in Homicide cases registered countrywide.
