UPDF arrests couple over illegal firearm possession

  • Capt Edwin Mawanda, the Public Relations Officer for the 5th Division Infantry, confirmed the arrest. He stated that the couple is currently in detention for further questioning, and the firearm has been seized by the UPDF.

Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) troops intercepted a man and his wife on Wednesday at the Apieta checkpoint in Lamwo District, where they were found in possession of an illegal firearm.

The suspects, Golden Ricky Olanya, 46, a resident of Ngora Village in Pobel Parish, Lukung Sub-County, and his wife, Jennifer Atoo, 28, a resident of Amero Village in Lukili Parish, Aceba Sub-County, were arrested around 2PM while traveling from Amuru District to Lamwo District on a Bajaj motorcycle, registration number UGG 453U.

Capt Edwin Mawanda, the Public Relations Officer for the 5th Division Infantry, confirmed the arrest. He stated that the couple is currently in detention for further questioning, and the firearm has been seized by the UPDF.

"Upon their arrest, security forces recovered a numberless pistol, which was found in their possession, though it had no rounds of ammunition," Capt Mawanda explained.

He noted that the operation marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to combat the illegal arms trade in the region.

Lt Col Ipolito Mubangizi, the 01 Dumisha Brigade Commander under the Achol Pii 5 Division Infantry, praised the local community in Northern Uganda for their cooperation with security forces in the fight against criminal gangs.

He assured the public that the UPDF remains committed to safeguarding the people and their property.
