Usuk county MP-elect Okiror joins race for Deputy Speaker

Mr. Jacob Oulanyah has publicly stated that he will contest for the Speaker position and therefore, several legislators, including a minister, are quietly pushing to replace Mr. Jacob Oulanyah as the Deputy Speaker in the 11th Parliament. The Number of those expressing interest in the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament has risen, the new entrant is city lawyer and Usuk County MP-elect Bosco Okiror.

Bosco joins eight legislators in the race for the post and they include, West Budama North MP Jacob Oboth-Oboth, Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among, Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko, Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa, Gomba West MP Robinah Rwakojo, Theodore Ssekikubo, the Lwemiyaga County MP and State Minister for Finance David Bahati.

By the close of the day, Okiror had confirmed the news, something that sent  some of NRM’s top wings in panic.

Sources at Parliament on February 26, 2021, revealed to us that closed-door meetings in the NRM Camp have already started to determine how to go about this.

It is no doubt that the youthful MP-elect didn’t find struggle in winning the flag for NRM in Usuk County and subsequently winning the recent elections. Okiror who joined politics while still at the university is remembered as the first student that took the Guild elections into a re-run after all candidates didn’t reach the desired percentage at Uganda Christian University (UCU).

Since then, he has been at the forefront of youth rights Advocacy and women empowerment in both his home town of Usuk, and across Uganda providing pro bono legal services.

The Election of a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament is the first activity of the assembly, after the administration of oaths, for all persons who will be gazetted by the Electoral Commission as winners of the parliamentary election held on January 14, 2021.
