The Greater Bushenyi Police Regional Spokesperson, Mr Apollo Tayebwa, identified the suspect as Immaculate Kwetegyeka and the deceased toddler as Kellian Akandwanaho

Police in Greater Bushenyi are investigating the circumstances under which a 28-year-old woman from Kazirwa Village in Muziguru Parish, Bitsya Sub-county, allegedly murdered her two-year-old son.

The Greater Bushenyi Police Regional Spokesperson, Mr Apollo Tayebwa, identified the suspect as Immaculate Kwetegyeka and the deceased toddler as Kellian Akandwanaho. He added that local residents claim the suspect has a history of mental illness.

“On Wednesday, we arrested Immaculate Kwetegyeka, who is alleged to have kicked and stepped on her biological son, leading to his death. The community says she has been mentally unsound. We have launched investigations into the matter, and she will be subjected to a medical examination to assess her mental condition,” Mr. Tayebwa said on Thursday.

He appealed to the public to report cases involving individuals who may pose a danger to themselves or others.

“We urge the public to report people who are suspected of committing crimes or showing signs of mental distress, depression, or stress. These individuals can become a danger to society, their families, and themselves,” Mr. Tayebwa added.

He said the toddler’s body was taken to Nsiika Health Centre IV for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

This incident comes less than a month after another murder in Buhweju District. On April 13, 2025, Ms. Shallon Nshemererwe allegedly killed her husband, Patrick Bainomugisha, and buried his body inside their home following a domestic dispute.

According to the 2024 Annual Police Crime Report, a total of 4,329 homicide cases were reported to police by the end of the year, representing a 1.9% increase from the 4,248 cases reported in 2023. Of these, 1,274 cases were taken to court, 333 were not proceeded with, and 2,722 remained under investigation.

A total of 4,411 people were reported as homicide victims in 2024. Among them were 3,494 male adults, 594 female adults, 209 male juveniles, and 114 female juveniles.
