  • This extreme formulation of agency, oblivious to the historical constraints within which Africans make choices, romanticizes agency as the freedom to make history as one pleases!

The vibrant Centre for African Studies at Uganda Martyrs University recently gave me the opportunity to discuss Owekitiibwa Apollo Makubuya’s decolonisation campaign.
Makubuya seeks to replace Uganda’s colonial iconography that seemingly celebrates colonialism with depictions of “deserving national heroes” to “contribute to national healing, harmony, [and] heritage.”
