Time is now to get back to real work

The country yesterday went into one of the last phases of the General Election, which has resulted in picking of office bearers across the governance hierarchy. This marks the beginning to the end of an extremely busy and chaotic electioneering period.

To all those that lost in the polls, we advise you that there is next time. And to all those that emerged victorious, we wish to tell you that the harder part is just about to start – the implementation of the promises you made while seeking the mandate.

From the highest office to the lowest in the land, the roles of each office bearer are clearly stipulated and it is paramount that every elected leader should adhere to them.
The public has entrusted you with the respective offices because they desire better services.

They want better health facilities, better roads, quality education, security, and peace. Ugandans want a conducive business environment; agriculture support and better living standards.

For those going to Parliament, the citizens demand that you pass laws that serve them rightly; that you check unnecessary expenditure by the government and yourselves, and that you represent them fairly in the House.

This is not a time to enrich oneself; it is time for service as you preached during campaigns. If for one reason or another you do not live to their expectations, the electorate have the power to recall you and send to that office people who are up to the task. Therefore, do not abuse the trust given to you.

Every leader worth their salt should be aware of the times we are in. Many businesses are struggling to regain their glory after the Covid-19 pandemic brought them to their knees. Many families are also struggling to put food on the table after the breadwinners lost jobs or after losing their loved ones to the virus and other illnesses.

The country also finds itself in the middle of a pandemic whose end is unknown, yet there are reports of misuse of resources meant to check the spread of Covid-19.

The country is now on the global radar for reported human rights abuses and endemic corruption.

To steer the country back to the right course will take only the right leaders in the right offices doing the work for which they were sent to by voters.

We only wish you the best in your endeavours. We shall also be available to hold you accountable as our noble duty demands of us.
