FDC asks presidential aspirants to show interest

The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has asked party members interested in the race for the presidential flag to submit their interest.
The party has given all interested candidates up to the end of July to write to its electoral commission, stating why they would like to represent FDC in the forthcoming 2021 General Election.
The presidential aspirants are required to pick forms from the party headquarters, fill them and return them. They are also required to present a valid party membership card, state their age, marital status, area of residence and academic credentials or qualifications.
The FDC president, Mr Patrick Amuriat, told Daily Monitor yesterday that they have set July 30 and July 31 as the deadline for the picking of nomination forms for the presidential aspirants.
He explained that the party has also set August 3 and August 4 as the nomination dates, and September 4 for the delegates conference to elect the flag bearers.
Mr Amuriat, however, clarified that since June 30 when the party invited submissions, no one has expressed interest in the presidency.
“The expression of interest is still ongoing but as far as I am concerned, no one has expressed interest for the party presidency yet. I ask all those interested in representing the party to start expressing interest,” he said.
According to the FDC president, the party expect their former presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, to express interest before the deadline elapses. However, in the event the July 31 deadline for picking forms elapses before Dr Besigye or any members shows interest in representing the party, he said they will convene and meet Dr Besigye and forge a way forward.
Sources close to Najjanankumbi headquarters told Daily Monitor that the party heads are slated to meet next week to discuss Dr Besigye’s candidature. The deputy party secretary, Mr Harold Kaija, said Dr Besigye has persistently declined to carry the party flag in 2021 because there is nothing new he expects from the forthcoming election.
