New York. German forward Dirk Nowitzki passed Moses Malone for seventh place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list on Monday, lifting Dallas to a 96-88 overtime victory over Brooklyn.
Nowitzki passed Malone with a three-pointer late in overtime, punctuating a dominant extra period for Dallas. The Mavs overcame a meltdown late in regulation to grab their sixth straight win, ending their Eastern Conference road trip 3-0.
Nowitzki had tied Malone (27,409) for seventh place on the scoring list with 12 points in regulation. He passed the Hall of Famer with his three-pointer with 34.8 seconds remaining in overtime. Nowitzki’s total of 27,412 points are 1,184 from Shaquille O’Neal’s 28,596 in sixth place on the all-time list.
Nowitzki became the highest-scoring international-born player in NBA history in November, when he passed Nigeria-born Hakeem Olajuwon for ninth-place on the all-time scoring list.
The German star, who was the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2007 and helped spark Dallas to the 2011 NBA title, re-signed with the Mavericks in July. Dallas improved to 11-0 on the road this season against Eastern Conference teams. They remain in a virtual tie for first place in the Southwest Division with the Memphis Grizzlies, who beat the slumping New York Knicks 105-83 on Monday.
Meanwhile, The Golden State Warriors underscored their dominance in the NBA’s Western Conference on Monday with a 117-91 pounding of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Stephen Curry scored 19 points, pulled down nine rebounds, handed out six assists and had four steals for the Warriors, who have reeled off four straight home wins by an average of 25 points. The Warriors connected on 15-of-28 from three-point range.
The Thunder had been clicking of late with Durant and Westbrook finally healthy.
