What you need to know:

  • To roar again. The Lightweight pugilist says he has recovered from a calf strain and is now focused on dropping his weight from 74kg to the ideal 61-63kg for his division.

Sharif “The Lion” Bogere has described  this season as tough. From the financial losses, fight cancellations, injuries to the unprecedented circumstances of having to work out in the midst of a pandemic, the Mayweather Promotions boxer acknowledged all of it has taken somewhat of a toll, especially the injury.

The 32-year-old orthodox boxer said he has been battling with a calf strain. He has, however, since healed and is now fully focused on getting back to his best weight. He also expressed his happiness now that he has healed and disclosed focusing on weight loss for the meantime.

“I’m glad that i finally healed from that calf strain that has bothered me for three months,” Bogere said of the injury prior to his return to training at Mayweather Boxing Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I was not able to run or work out as hard as I would have wanted but thank Allah, I’m ok now. I resumed training with the main focus on weight loss.”

Weight battle
As a lightweight boxer, Bogere (32-2) normally weighs 135-140 (61kg to 63.5kg) pounds contrary to the 165 pounds (175kg) he currently weighs.
“I resumed my routine workout. It is obviously hard to train under the Covid-19 circumstances but we try to keep the precautions as recommended by the experts,” he said.

Bogere added: “Because of this pandemic, the fights that were lined up for me had to be cancelled and that means loss of money. But I’m not giving up since this situation is just here briefly and once it’s gone and everything is back to normal, I’ll be ready,” he said.

The pandemic hit Nevada harder than most US states and poses a threat to Las Vegas’ business model that relies on bringing people together for gambling, entertainment and conventions.

Even as some casinos and venues prepare to partially reopen, questions linger about how willing clients will be to fly, grab dice from a stranger and dance in a nightclub or attend a boxing fight.
Bogere’s last fight, 21 months ago, saw him suffer his second pro defeat to Javier Fortuna in an eliminator clash.

2016

Bogere, who signed for Mayweather Promotions owned by American boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, has been nursing a calf strain. He also suffered a torn Achilles while training for a fight in October 2016. He won his first bout since recovering from the torn Achilles with a UD against Jose Luis Rodriguez on October 21, 2017 at Sam’s Town Live
