Gayita, Babu propelling Cobap into pole position

KAMPALA.

Since the National Boxing League begun July 30, some clubs are still struggling to cope with a marathon tournament that has been absent since the ‘80s.

While giants like UPDF have not featured even once, Cobap and KCCA are flying high in the Elite league, with youthful exuberance their most lethal weapon.

Notably, Cobap’s duo of bantamweight Ronald Gayita and middleweight Yusuf Babu have stood out as the anchors in what seems a Cinderella run for a club, who usually vie for Youths honours. In fact they are the national youth champions.

For starters, Gayita is the man to beat in his weight division. He has not lost to a single fight in five contests, contributing 10 solid points to the club’s 36. The pint-sized boxer is neither stylish nor physically imposing but he is propelled by a big heart, which keeps him going at the opponent throughout.

Gayita never tires and whoever shall beat him should not bother “fighting” him because “fighting” is what he does best. To him the end means much more than the means.

Whatever Gayita misses teammate Babu has. The rangy boxer has the swag and style that whenever he is in the ring, the feeling is that of fully-filled arena, despite the usual low turn up. The national middleweight champion has convincingly beaten three opponents: Ivan Magumba, Reagan Simbwa and Joel Drama and looks better in every fight.

Cobap will not be in Bombo today but they are sure they are the team to beat, despite being deducted four points for fielding a boxer in two different weights.
