Defending champions Kampala Boxing Club (KBC) and bitter rivals Lukanga made a huge statement last evening with four of their pugilists each qualifying for the National Open Boxing Championship quarterfinals at Lugogo.
Sula Ssegawa ochestrated KBC’s surge along with Edward Kakembo, Alex Lukwago and Mubarak Seguya.
“We know they (Lukanga) want it badly but we are ready for the challenge,” said Ssegawa, the KBC and national team captain.

Lukanga, keen on retaining the overall title, saw Olympian Ronald Serugo progress with a walkover, Frank Kiwalabye outscored UPDF’s Atenyi Nzaihire in the flyweight while former Bomber Sebastian Mukasa (lightweight) knocked out Katwe’s Alex Kasujja.

Defending champion Atanus Mugerwa overpowered Rhino’s Baluku Tadeo in an exciting bantamweight bout.
“The bantamweight division has quality boxers with experience,” said UABF technical member Charles Lubuulwa, a three-time Olympian. Lubuulwa was particularly impressed by Mugerwa, Kakembo, Aldina Muzei and Kato Katende.

The UABF technical team will use the tournament to form a Bombers team ahead of the All Africa Games due 3-18 September in Maputo, Mozambique.
