Catherine Nanziri, Uganda’s first female Olympic boxer has had her campaign ended on the debut after losing to Japan’s Tsukimi Namik in the flyweight division.

Namiki impressed all the five judges earning a 5-0 unanimous decision victory to book a date with Brazil’s Graziele Sousa on Thursday.

Namiki and Nanziri were the first female boxers to represent their respective countries at the Olympics.

Now Nanziri has to turn her focus onto the Commonwealth Games due July 2022 in Birmingham, UK.

That means the onus of giving Uganda the first boxing win at the Olympics since 2004 has shifted to 2019 African Games silver medalist David Ssemuju and Bombers captain Musa Shadir Bwogi.

Middleweight Ssemuju faces Algeria’s Younes Nemouchi tomorrow while welterweight Shadir will take on Georgia's Eskerkhan Madiev, on Tuesday.

Sam Rukundo was the last to do so before losing a quarterfinal bout at Athens 2004.
