What you need to know:

Focus On 2025. Coach Abhay Sharma’s tactical approach, combined with the inclusion of young, promising players, sets the stage for Uganda to not only defend their title in Kigali but also shape their squad for the future ICC T20 World Cup events.

The Cricket Cranes touched down in Kigali on Monday, signaling their intent to end the year on a high as they prepare to defend their ILT20 Continent Cup - Africa title at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium.

The tournament, which runs from December 4 to 14, will feature hosts Rwanda, Botswana, and Nigeria after Kenya withdrew at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances.

The defending champions checked into the La Palisse Hotel in Nyamata and quickly transitioned into competition mode with a light training session at the tournament venue.

Coach Abhay Sharma and his charges are keen to replicate last year’s heroics when they edged Kenya by a solitary run in an electrifying final at the Nairobi Gymkhana Oval.

Sticking to plans

“Preparation and execution are key,” said Sharma. “We are testing players in different roles to find the best combinations, especially with next year’s ICC Africa T20 World Cup Qualifier Final in mind. Success will follow if we stick to our plans.”

The selectors have opted for a blend of youth and experience. Returning to the senior team are stylish opener Simon Ssesazi, finger spinner Joseph Baguma, and batting all-rounder Pascal Murungi. Chairman of Selectors Nehal Bibodi highlighted the emphasis on nurturing talent, explaining, “Murungi’s inclusion is about exposure, and Baguma has shown immense potential for a long career. We’re also creating pathways through the A team for form recoveries and development.”

Zebras opener

Uganda’s campaign begins tomorrow against Botswana, led by the explosive Karabo Mothlanka. Captain Riazat Ali Shah, recently crowned Cricketer of the Year, will rely on his side’s depth and versatility.

However, the Cricket Cranes should be wary of Botswana’s T20 firepower, including wicket-keeper Valentine Mbazo, big-hitter Thatayaone Tshose and opening batsman Vinoo Balakrishnan as well as wily pinners; Mmoloki Mooketsi and Katlo Piet.

As they chase back-to-back titles, the Cricket Cranes also have their sights set on building momentum ahead of next year’s qualifiers, where two African teams will earn spots at the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India.
