What you need to know:
The playing format of ‘Rejected’ had both players tee off at every hole and based on the position of their tee shots, the opposing team chose the position from where the pairing would play their second shots.
Bob Matsiko and Peter Atwine have known each other for over a decade in life.
They have always paired together for match-play golf competitions and overtime, they’ve developed a fine sync and chemistry on the golf course.
So when they came together to form Team P&B at the first leg of the Katogo Golf Series presented by I&M Bank at Entebbe Club, few knew how much they possessed.
Playing a unique format of ‘Rejected’ which heavily hinged on the tee-shots of the pairings, Matsiko and Atwine were unstoppable.
They were the best of the day at the par-71 course with a collated best score of 57 nett at the weekend.
“The game was challenging because the format is not what we are used to,” admitted a happy Atwine, whose handicap index is 22.
The smile couldn’t leave Matsiko’s face either after they were rewarded with two air tickets by RwandAir to their preferred destinations valid between then until 2026, as Right Said Fred’s Stand Up for the Champions played.
They had played against Peace Hellen and Flora Ihunde, who were very formidable opponents, and also finished as the third best female pairing on the day with 61 nett on count-back (c/b).
“They (ladies) found us on our good day,” said Matsiko, who handicap index is 18. He first played golf as a teenager in Kabale and only resumed playing three years ago.
The playing format of ‘Rejected’ had both players tee off at every hole and based on the position of their tee shots, the opposing team chose the position from where the pairing would play their second shots.
Then one would move their ball to the chosen position (place the ball not more than one scorecard length from where their partner’s ball laid) and play each their own ball from that position until they holed out. The better nett score of the pair on each hole was the score that would count as the team score.
However, each team had six holes where they could reject the position chosen by the opposing team and they could choose where to play their second shots from. And at these holes, the worse nett score would count as the team score.
Atwine and Matsiko desired tee-shots onto the fairways. “We complement each other perfectly,” said Atwine.
“We managed to get a working formula. If your partner has a better ball, you endeavour it well and hole put. And don’t fear to reject if you think you can make a better score,” he added.
Their best score on the day was a nett eagle at the par-3 Hole No.16.
