What you need to know:

After serving in the capacity of the UGU vice-president, Katto is still back on the podium. On Sunday, he was crowned as the best player at the Uganda Seniors Open Golf Championship at Uganda Golf Club (UGC) in Kitante.

For long over the past half-a-decade, John Katto stepped onto the podiums during the 19th hole prize-giving ceremonies to give away awards as a Uganda Golf Union (UGU) executive member.

After serving in the capacity of the UGU vice-president, Katto is still back on the podium. On Sunday, he was crowned as the best player at the Uganda Seniors Open Golf Championship at Uganda Golf Club (UGC) in Kitante.

Playing off handicap 11, Katto conquered two-day championship and won with a best score of 141 nett after 36 holes at the par-72 course.

“It feels good and very nice, I am really happy and I thank God for it because it is God who helped me to be this really fit and to be cleared headed and to be happy on the course,” Katto reacted after picking his silverware.

UCAA'S Fre Bamwesigye (C) hands over titles to Katto (R) and the best lady Opio.

Much of his delight came from a perfect start. “I played three under nett yesterday (Saturday),” he said. “And I enjoyed myself a lot. Today (Sunday) was a little harder. The team I was playing with was struggling a bit. And I knew that I had a very good competitor in John Muchiri. I managed to beat him and I am very happy.”

This was the second time that Katto was playing the Seniors Open, in the bronze category of ages of 55-64 years. On Saturday, Katto carded two birdies on Holes par-5 No.5 and par-3 No.6 for 69 nett.

However, on Sunday, Katto did not card any birdie in a round of 72 nett. Muchiri finished as the best gross player with 161 gross but the overall female winner was Jeniffer Opio with 141 nett.
