Contrary to a decade ago, Oscar Semawere is a very busy man. The former chairman of Entebbe Club now doesn’t play too often.

Semawere is currently the Uganda’s Honorary Consul General of Uganda to Mozambique and the office in Maputo is understandably demanding.

Even when Semawere has lately had time to play a round at the par-71 course, it hasn’t yielded stellar results.

However, Semawere on Saturday found his groove when he beat a field of about 40 players to win the ultimate round of the Challengers Golf Series at Entebbe.

Playing off handicap 14, Semawere returned a best score of 72 nett and beat his next challenger Robert Ejiku on count-back. “I had never won in any monthly tournament in the Challenger Series. This is my first one,” Semawere said.

“Luckily enough or thank God, I have won the ultimate one. I am proud of it.” He produced an immaculate round on a day where Casper Tevin Okiru had been in the lead at halfway stage with a score of 10-under nett.

Semawere wears a champion's smile.

When the sun came out, Semawere took charge of the leaderboard. “I didn’t put myself under any pressure,” the aviation consultant said.

“I took each hole as a new hole. So without that forcing, I was very consistent, not getting off the fairways. I am really proud of it and look forward to even winning next year,” he added.

The top six players on the day were separated by a stroke. Semawere was crowned during a colourful prize-giving ceremony at Grik Hotel, following a dinner and an annual general meeting by Challengers Golf.

The Challengers Golf, a social elite golfing group of friends from Entebbe and Uganda Golf Club, discussed projects such as supporting Entebbe Club, philanthropy through educating young golfers and investments.

According to their chairman Dennis Kahindi, Challengers Golf plan to induct new members over the coming months and increase their involvement at Entebbe Club.
