KAMPALA- West Nile Golf Club continued to carry the headlines by assuming leadership of the points log after winning the fourth leg of the Uganda Golf Tour at the weekend.

The Arua-based club assembled enough ammunition to amass 136 points and win the Castle Lite and Uganda Tourism Board-sponsored leg hosted by the Mary Louis Simkins Memorial Golf Club in Namulonge on Saturday.

West Nile becomes the first club to win two legs on the Tour having won in Mbale on April 6. Uganda Golf Club (UGC) won the first leg in Kigo on March 30 while Tooro won their own leg on April 27. Saturday’s victory came on the back of overall winner Gordon Obitre Gama who returned 65 nett off handicap 27 at the nine-par 72 course. “This is just my first overall win since starting out the last year,” a delighted Obitre told this paper.

But he was aided to victory by the inside knowledge of the newly revamped course.

“The course was fine. I’ve played here several times,” he said after receiving his prize from Uganda Golf Union president Innocent Kihika.
“It was better than when I last played here; the fairways were good. My putting was good and drove on the fairway but there were so many out of bounds today,” added the man who picked three birdies on the day. Meanwhile, Bridget Nakamoga emerged as overall female winner after returning 65 nett off handicap 10.

West Nile wiped out the two-point deficit on UGC and now lead the standings with 294 points ahead their home leg on May 18.
