Remember 2010 when Moses Kipsiro won a double long distance Gold at the Commonwealth Games in India?

At his state luncheon, he requested President Museveni for a training facility, a request reaffirmed by Stephen Kiprotich in 2012 following his Olympic Gold.

The project to construct that High Altitude Training Centre in Teryet, Bukwo District, has dragged on since. But, finally, it is set for completion next year.

“Phase one is at 77 per cent completion,” sports commissioner Omara Apita said.

Last week, officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, National Council of Sports, Uganda Athletics Federation and Office of the President visited the facility.

“The hostel is at 99 percent completion, only awaiting furniture fittings. Laying of tartan on the 3.2km jogging track is going to be done soon.

“The football and rugby pitches are on course for completion. There will be an artificial turf fitted for the former. The rugby ground will have a six-lane running track too,” Apita noted in his report.

While all the aforementioned are basics following the connection of water and electricity plus grading of the road from Kapchorwa to Bukwo, there are further plans as and when funding is realised from government.

Apita said the high altitude training centre will have multiple hostels, modern hotel, a physio room, a swimming pool and a helipad.

The project is being undertaken by China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation with athletics, football, swimming and rugby to benefit.
