KAMPALA. Joel Mwisukye and Winnie Birungi were a class apart in the boys and girls categories at the first ever Kampala Junior Open yesterday at Lugogo tennis club.
Mwisukye, a 17-year-old boy, overcame rival and good friend Arnold Jurua (4-3) in the final to emerge champion.
The tournament format was a single set and allowed the first player to reach 10 points emerge winner. It only changed in the final where whoever won four games first ruled.
“It is my first win and am looking forward to more. I don’t have the right words to explain what I am going through now,” an elated Mwisuke told Daily Monitor.
Mwisukye had beaten Christopher Ozelle (10-2) and John Mary Muwanga (10-3) in the semis and quarters respectively.
The Lugogo Boys Tennis Club product also dreams of playing on tours and pro circuits in future.
In the girls category, Birungi got the better of Patiece Athieno (10-3) in the final which left the cowd disappointed as they had anticipated a tough challenge from Athieno. Unfortunately she never showed up.
Tennis legend and coach Dennis Oduke hailed the competition and thanked the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Red Rhino and all the academies for making it a success.
