The two sides are expected to challenge for the title this season and indeed ended the first round occupying the first two slots, with Sport-S emerging as log leaders.
As the second round of the National Volleyball League got underway over the weekend, all eyes were on defending champions Sport-S and Nemostars.
The two sides are expected to challenge for the title this season and indeed ended the first round occupying the first two slots, with Sport-S emerging as log leaders.
Sport-S and Nemostars shared the two major accolades from last season, with Sport-S winning the league and Nemostars lifting the National Club Championship.
And for Sport-S, the second round started with a familiar feeling of victory, as the team brushed aside Sky Volleyball Club in straight sets on Sunday to stretch its unbeaten run to 10 matches.
Even in the absence of main setter Moses Odeke, Warren Muhangi’s charges made light work of the opponent, relying on their tremendous net defence to block the life out of Sky.
Julius Nuwahereza filled Odeke’s shoes on the day and connected well with Jonathan Tumukunde, Duke Philip Komukama and Malil Meen Gum to destroy the Sky net defence on the day.
Allan Alinda, deployed as a middle blocker on the day, showed flashes of brilliance in attack to complement Samuel Engwau.
Alinda will be tasked to play a lot more through the middle to fill the void left by the injured Emmanuel Okia.
Sport-S got out of the blocks early to take the first set 25-13 before adding the second 25-17.
The dominant performance stretched to the third frame, in which the Nsambya based outfit limited Sky to 11 points to close the game and take maximum points.
Maximum points for Nemo
Nemostars were expected to face a tough test against Police but relied on their experience to clinch all three points on Saturday.
Led by team captain George Aporu, Nemo took a highly-contested first set 28-26 to and stretched that by clinching the second 25-19.
Police’s efforts to get back in the game fell short as the six-time champions wrapped it up with a 25-23 third set to take all the three points.
Nemo and Sport-S remain favourites for the top two slots in the fight for playoffs spots but every victory registered is crucial, with teams like KCCA and UCU also fighting to be in the top four.
