Roxberry opens five-point lead

Roxberry have a five-point lead.

What you need to know:

Roxberry, who came into the second stanza of the league, took full advantage of Upper Volta's inconsistencies, to complete a double and surge further clear atop.

Roxberry opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Nile Special National Pool League in a 12-8 win over Upper Volta in a highly-anticipated game at Roxberry Arena in Kiwanga, Mukono.

Roxberry, who came into the second stanza of the league, took full advantage of Upper Volta's inconsistencies, to complete a double and surge further clear atop.

Coming from a bonus-point win over Scrap Buyers last weekend, Upper Volta were in buoyant mood and were quick to introduce their new signing Moses Mofya from Zambia into the line-up.

But Roxberry, who were solid from cue off, put up a show of their own to take a firm grip on the title race.

Starting with a break and finish against Rashid Wagaba, route opener Simon ‘Computer’ Lubuulwa handed Roxberry full advantage. A careful clearing by Ceaser Chandiga saw Upper Volta earn a carbon copy finish in the second frame.

But the going got tougher as Upper Volta lost three consecutive frames including a huge chance by new signing Joseph Rwotokonya sank both the black and the cue ball before clawing back to draw 5-5 at the break.

Chandiga had the best of Upper Volta's opportunities and he won three of his four frames.

The home side were set for a nervy finale but Chandiga failed to pot black in the centre against Sejjemba.

"I knew this was going to be a tough game. They [Roxberry] had a good run and have been dangerous. It hurts that we lost but the second round of the league has just resumed," said Upper Volta captain Mustapha Bwire.

After Lubuulwa won the 16th frame to give Roxberry at least a point, it was a matter of when the winning frame would come. Despite Kazibwe losing the 17th frame to Mofya, victory was the only option.

The win takes Roxberry to 51 points after 16 games leading Scrap Buyers by five points. Scrap Buyers continued a poor run, dropping two points to Wakiso City in a 10-all draw. Upper Volta is third level on 46 points.

Roxberry captain Sejjemba said that he was satisfied with the result.

"At Roxberry you have to win every game and we want to do that in the next game as well. Now we are in a good phase of the season and that is more important," he said.

Elsewhere, bottom-of-the-table Nakawa Pool Rangers surrendered a walkover victory after failing to travel to Mbale.
