What you need to know:

In December 2024, Uganda was awarded the bid to host the regional tournament that will run between February 16-23 at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

When the CAVB one V Club championship serves off in February, Uganda will be represented by up to eight teams.

In December 2024, Uganda was awarded the bid to host the regional tournament that will run between February 16-23 at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

The annual event was postponed from 2024 following a political transfer of power from Rwanda’s Fernand Ruterana to Uganda’s Sadik Nasiwu, which dragged preparations.

Nasiwu took the zone’s presidency in August 2024 but officially took office in October following a delayed handover that took place in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

“We received bids from Rwanda and Uganda, and a decision was made to award it to Uganda,” Nasiwu told Daily Monitor.

Kigali hosted the previous edition of the competition as Rwanda National Police and Kenya Pipeline emerged winners in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.

Uganda last hosted an international event in 2019 when the women’s All-Africa Games Qualifiers came to Kampala and attracted big shots like Kenya.

In his campaigns, Nasiwu emphasized the need to make regional competition affordable for clubs as a way of attracting more teams and improving competition.

Several teams in the region have previously failed to make it to the zonal competitions due to a lack of resources to pay registration and other costs involved.

Zone V is made of 12 countries, with each allowed to field the top three teams in both genders. The host nation is allowed up to four entries in each category.

Uganda will be represented by league champions Sport-S, Club Championship winners Nemostars, KAVC and UCU Doves in the men’s category while KCB-Nkumba, KCCA, Ndejje Elites and Sport-S Ladies will carry the flag in the women’s category.

Sport-S, who lost the final to Rwanda’s Police in 2023, will be looking to make amends on home soil. Nemostars, who missed the 2023 edition are also looking to use the Zone V championship to test their readiness for the Africa Club Championship.

Neighbours Kenya have already confirmed sending five teams to the competition. Pipeline, Prisons and KCB will carry Kenya’s flag in the women’s category.

KPA and Prisons are also confirmed for the men’s competition. Rwanda is also expected to send its top cream for the competition.

League champions APR, defending champions Police and Kepler are the sides expected to fight for the men’s trophy in Kampala.
